Pocket of Heaven (pre-release)
(The Land of Deborah)
Music, Lyrics & Arrangement by TLOD
Lyrics
Everybody’s got a little piece of heaven in their pocket
In mine there are memories of you
Wrapped up with ribbon
We could write stories
Of dreams we’ve yet to make
In Heaven
(In my pocket, in my pocket of heaven)
I’ve got all the summertimes and all the pretty skies I could wish for
Please don’t go away
You’ll never find you way back home again
These fields go on forever and ever
We could ride on a carpet made for two
Dream dreams of wonder
If we wanted to
In Heaven
(In my pocket, in my pocket of heaven)
Bridge
You make me cry
You make me high
Like a cloud (In my pocket, in my pocket of heaven)
You’ve got to know
There’s no one I would rather go with
In dreams or my life
In Heaven
In Heaven
(In my pocket, in my pocket of heaven)
We could ride on a carpet made for two
Dream dreams of wonder If we wanted to
In Heaven
(In my pocket, in my pocket of heaven)
Should've Stayed In Bed
(The Land of Deborah)
Music, Lyrics and Arrangement by TLOD
Some songs just turn up unannounced. This is one of them.
Lyrics
There’s something but I don’t know what
Is eating at my soul
I’m sitting in the window seat
Wishing that I could go
I think that everybody knows
What happened when you left me
I can’t believe I made it here
It seems that my life’s not ended
Chorus
I made it through my tears, but I can’t see
I made it though the pain, but I can’t breathe
I need a drink of water, wipe my head
I should’ve stayed in bed
Memories are fading fast
I don’t think of you at all
You’re just a blur inside my head
Easy to ignore
I’m lying to myself you see, I can, see you in my sleep
You're almost like a silhouette
Comforting my fears
Even in my bed, I see you there
I’m hiding under covers but the shape of your head is on the pillow
And I, remember how you smiled in the morning when the sun came up
Where it’s warm
Where it’s safe
I can hide
Forever
(The Land of Deborah)
Music & Lyrics by TLOD. Instrumental arrangement by Craig McKenzie. Vocal arrangement by TLOD
This song was originally written on the piano. My friend, Craig McKenzie heard the demo and offered to add his magic to it. I added the backing vocals and this is the result. I love this!
Lyrics
Everyone’s afraid
No one's had the time to make it easy
Everyone’s alone
Are you there for me?
I can stand alone
But it would make me feel so much better
If you’d take my hand
Can you stay for me?
Chorus
I can’t hold onto you like I can’t hold onto the sun
I didn’t mean to fall
I didn’t mean to fall in love
Forever
You can make me into beauty
All I need is the sun from your lips
I can feel myself falling free
Falling free
Bridge
And I don’t want to lose you
Well I’m going to lose myself anyway
They’re closing all my windows
Taken
(The Land of Deborah)
Music, Lyrics and Arrangement by TLOD
The evolution of this piece was unusual for me.
2003. I was fooling around on my keyboards and came up with this tune. A couple of hours later I had filled in all the bits and pieces. However, I felt something was missing..... lyrics! But what?
Leafing through my lyric book, which housed my ideas through the ages, I came across these phrases. Within the hour the vocals were done.
Normally, music and lyrics come to me at the same time. It was a weird experience when the music appeared first and then the words, which had already been written, were then applied. It was as if the lyrics were just waiting for a purpose.
It was used in the short film, "A Rendezvous", directed by Michelle Muldoon and got nominated for Best Composition at the Action on Film International Film Festival. Very happy.
Lyrics
Leaves fall
Leaves fall like summer rain
As the sun breaks through my cloudy mind I breathe again
Ask me
Ask me what the future holds
I don’t try to understand how this story goes
I’m taken
I’m taken
Taken with you
I Don't Mind
(The Land of Deborah)
Music, Lyrics & Arrangement by TLOD
When director Michelle Muldoon asked me to write a theme song to the short film, "Pot Luck" she put a CD of music from 'The Partridge Family' in my hand. Growing up in England I wasn't too familiar with the show so I listened to it over and over. Turned out I liked it. Groovy.
I thought about the music and a came up with a theme. I felt the onset of lyrics forming in my mind and I recorded it anyway. Why not? I sent both tracks to Michelle and she ended up using the instrumental for the opening titles and the song for the end credits. Nice!
The film showed in some festivals and the music ended up being nominated for Best Original Song at the Feel Good International Film Festival and for Best Composition at the Action on Film International Film Festival. It won the latter. Marvelous.
Lyrics
I don’t mind if you say you love me
Anytime I don’t mind
Coz I don’t know what you’re thinking of me
All I know is that you are mine
Everybody wants be somewhere
All I really want is to be with you
I don’t mind if you say you love me
Anytime I don’t mind
Who’d’ve thought you that of all the people
I’d be yours and you’d be mine
I’d be yours and you’d be mine
I’d be yours and you’d be mine
I’d be yours and you’d be mine
Whispering
(The Land of Deborah)
Music, Lyrics & Arrangement by TLOD
This song was born during a night I was stranded in a small town in Guatemala. Traveling alone is fine, but now and again - when things aren't going so well - it can feel very lonely. I was missing my fella so I was inspired to write this.
So you see, good things can come from bad situations. I really love this song. This is why one should always travel with a guitar called Jerry.
Lyrics
Didn’t think it could be so hard
To think a thought with all this noise around my head
Children are screaming
Dogs that are barking
And car alarms that just don’t stop
Am I asking too much?
Chorus
He said, “Listen to the sound of my voice
I will bring you down
I will make it ok”.
Then he wrapped us both up in a blanket of sound
And the noises they went away
As he whispered into my mouth
I don’t want to be here anymore
With all this pain
So can you please take it away
Rain it keeps pouring
Storms that are lashing
And the wind drowns out my name
Can I have a new day?
Bridge
There is nothing I’d rather do
Than hand you my brain you’d know what to do
To make it be still
Please make it be still
Keeps on raining it doesn’t stop
My eyes are dry
It’s cold outside
Am I locked out?
Loud conversations
Clatter through hallways
Invisible ghosts with their visible voices
Tell me there’s more to my life
The Start
(The Land of Deborah)
Written and Performed by TLOD
This tune reminds me of motion. Of people on the move. Not necessarily in a rush. Just the idea of going somewhere.
When I wrote it I didn't have anything in mind. I just liked the chord sequence and built from there.
As for the vocalizations, I like the idea of the voice as an instrument so after everything was written I added the vocal lines with this in mind. I really like the harmonies here.
The Perfect Pair
(The Land of Deborah)
Music & Lyrics by TLOD
This song was inspired by an afternoon spent people-watching at Leicester Square...
What if Cupid wrote a song?
Lyrics
He sits alone drinking coffee as he watches as the girls go by
He wonders why he is sitting there alone with no one at his side
He thinks he’ll always be on his own
As he stares up into space
But when he looks down he notices a strong, but smiling face
She laughs out loud, doesn’t notice that it’s almost time for her to leave
She picks her things up as she’s waiting for her friends
But then she feels the need
To turn around and to notice him
As he stares up into space
For some unknown reason she feels compelled to memorize his face
Chorus
Don’t make me come and bash your heads together
You’re the perfect pair
Don’t make me waste another arrow on you
You know you are the perfect pair
His heart stops beating as he’s drawn into her smile, but then he turns away
She wonders why he can’t see her as she tries to burn thoughts in his brain
From my perspective it’s obvious
These two were meant to be
I can’t get tired of all this fuss ‘cos there’s no guarantees
Bridge
Well it’s my job I have to do the driving
I’ve only got enough darts to pierce their pride
This thing is done and now it works without me
I might as well retire
They don’t need me
I might as well be drinking coffee
I can’t help smiling as she walks across the square
My deed is done today
You feel the force that’s between them and you know it’s just a kiss away
About time, why did you take so long?
You both know you’re meant to be
I know that you’ll both be happy
That’s the part I never see
Angel Wings
(The Land of Deborah)
Music & Lyrics by TLOD
This song started with the lyric idea, "I left my wings beside your bed". The rest of the song then appeared.
Lyrics
I wake up and I see the sunrise
I’m still here
I feel the wind upon my face
I feel my years
I want to be an angel
I want to be someone’s dream
I feel my heart is overwhelmed and I can’t see
My tongue is twisted, my knees are shaking - let me breathe
I want to be your angel
I want to be your dream
Chorus
I left my wings beside your bed
I don’t want to be on a cloud anymore
This time I want to mean something to someone
Do I need a reason?
Do I need?
It’s not that I am really something
I don’t think far
I don’t mean to put me down
But I know that I’m not a star
But I want to be your angel
So I will sit and dream
Bridge
Do I need to try?
Do I need to get your attention?
Do I need to send out a shooting star that just happens to mention
That I’m just waiting for my harp and then I’ll sing you a song
To let you know that I care
That I care
That I care
Morning In Berlin
(The Land of Deborah)
Written and Performed by TLOD
When trying to come up with a title for this piece it reminded me of an early morning walk along snowy streets. In Berlin seemed a good idea.
Love Karma
(The Land of Deborah)
Music & Lyrics by TLOD
If reincarnation exists, is it possible that we are destined to fall in love with the same person over and over again? This song would suggest it is. I also like the idea that a person can be afraid to love.
Intriguing, Captain.
Lyrics
It doesn’t matter what you say or do
I just want to be close to you
It doesn’t matter what I think or say
I still feel the same
Chorus
But I won’t think about you every night
Coz if I did then every wall that stands around me
Would buckle and I’ll feel you gladly
And I don’t want to feel this good
I’m constantly surprised the way that love turns out
Did this happened in our other lives?
Was our love always this loud?
Bridge
What if this all works out?
Are we just actors in a story that was always written down?
And even, even it’s meant to be
Should it really be this easy?
It doesn’t matter what I say or do
I’m still drawn to you
Will this happen to us every life?
I wish I knew, I wish I knew, I wish I knew
And I will think about you every night
And I can’t wait for every wall that stands around me
To buckle and I’ll feel you gladly
And I will feel this good
Inside Love
(The Land of Deborah)
Music & Lyrics by TLOD
Lyrics
I thought about it
It made me a little bit crazy
But I think I’m in love
I get this feeling
When I’m looking at you
When you hold my hand
When you hold me
Chorus
You may be the only one I’m thinking of forever
It feels like no one else can ever take your place
In my mind
I rest my head on your shoulder
I rest my heart there too
It’s safe with you
So safe
And when I frown
You lift me up
And the corners of my mouth with your song
Your song
Bridge
Doo-do-do-do-do-doo
I want to be here
Doo-do-do-do-do-doo
It’s where I belong
Doo-do-do-do-do-doo
I’ve waited for you
